Takhi Post – 30 Years of Reintroduction

Read in the current Takhi Post how an idea became a success story within 30 years.

Fascination was at the root of the idea to reintroduce the wild horse to its last refuge. For centuries, Mongolians have felt a close bond with horses; they enabled the equestrian people to conquer the largest (albeit short-lived) world empire in history. They valued the untameable Primeval Wild Horses even more highly than their mounts. The wish to see them roaming the steppe again was obvious.

30th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Przewalski horse

On June 6, a press conference was held in the press conference hall of the Channel 25 television station in Ulaanbaatar to mark the 30th anniversary of the reintroduction of the Przewalski horse to Mongolia.

On June 6, 1992, the first Takhi were transported to Takhiin tal.

The press conference was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, the directors of the national parks Hustai and Khomyn Tal, and the Great Gobi B strictly protected area, the representative office of the International Takhi Group, as well as the former park directors and other representatives.

Offspring in the Gobi

The first takhi foal of the year was born! This is a special event for the whole ITG and Great Gobi B team every year. It shows how important and successful our work for the wild horses is. We would like to thank everyone who is committed to this special species and its habitat.

Travel with us to the wild horses

Together with the tour operator ODKHA Travel, a trip to Mongolia to see the wild horses is being made possible this summer.

Experience the wild horses up close and immerse yourself in the nomadic everyday life of the local herdsmen.

Our goal is to establish sustainable tourism in the still largely untouched part of the Mongolian Gobi. A portion of the proceeds from the trip will support socio-economic activities around the Great Gobi B Strictly Protected Area.

349 takhi in the Great Gobi B

There are currently around 851 wild horses living in Mongolia: As of December 2021, 349 takhi live in the Great Gobi “B” Strictly Protected Area, 380 takhi in the Hustai National Park, and 122 in the Khomyn Tal National Park. The wild horses survived the winter well.

Young scientists

The International Takhi Group and the Great Gobi “B” Protected Area Administration launched the “YOUNG RESEARCHER PROGRAM” at the beginning of March 2022 at secondary schools in the protected area’s buffer zone.

The aim of the program is to arouse the interest of secondary school students in science experiments. Pupils should learn to identify wild animals, plants, microorganisms, and their living conditions, as well as environmental phenomena.

Schools in the buffer zone are secondary schools of the Bugat, Tonkhil soums of the Gobi-Altai aimag and the Altai, Uench and Bulgan soums of the Khovd aimag.

Happy Lunar New Year!

In Mongolia, the first celebration of the year is the Lunar New Year, Tsagaan Sar, which means “white moon”.

ITG Workshop 2022

Every year the ITG organizes a workshop where the project partners come together for 3 days. An enthusiastic team from Mongolia, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Norway, and Germany share project and study results, discuss ongoing activities and exchange new ideas and ways to go forward. This year, the presentations and discussions were full of peoples’ engagement, hope, and exciting outlooks for the future, even in the middle of a pandemic. The iconic takhi holds an umbrella over the whole “ITG family”. Every single person in our team puts his/her energy towards the conservation of the wild horses and their ecosystem. In manifold projects, our team works towards conservation for fauna, flora, and people with the takhi as our guiding animal.
